So What are the Right Materials for Basement Finishing?

Referring back to the US Dept of Energy Study, they recommend that a basement finishing system should:

  • Be constructed from materials that are resistant to the constant flow of moisture into a basement.
  • Be constructed from materials that are not food sources for mold growth, nor trap food sources for mold growth.
  • Use at least an R-11 insulation on exterior walls to prevent warm air in the winter from condensing onto cooler basement wall surfaces.
  • Be breathable. Moisture should be allowed to evaporate or better, be removed from the interior environment. Maintaining a relative humidity level below 50% does not allow mold to grow!
