Dehumidifiers

Even when a basement has been “waterproofed” and does not get any seepage; it can retain a basement mold type smell. This is because of the naturally occurring humidity that is derived from building a concrete structure in the ground and then heating the interior.

In Michigan basements & Ohio basements, the earth outside in the winter is very cold.  Since your basement is typically kept at 65–70 degrees, the coolness transmitted through the concrete floor and walls meets the warm basement air creating humidity and that damp feeling. In the summer, the warm, humid air outside can enter your basement where the air is cooler. This increases the relative humidity to the point where moisture condenses onto cooler surfaces.  High humidity is conducive to basement mold growth and the active molds spores produce the musty odor so often associated with basements.

A dehumidifier is the answer, but not just any dehumidifier!
